Davenport was late on the scene causing the start to be delayed by 15 minutes, but when the flag finally fell Cheroot jumped off in front from Davenport and Lord Lorne. It was not until after the Red House that Cheroot finally gave up the lead to Pinzon, but he was there on sufferance. Within 2 furlongs Donovan had taken over and set such a strong gallop that no one could match him and he came home an easy winner by 3 lengths in 3 minutes 13 seconds, with 3 lengths between Miguel and Davenport. Donovan was a prolific winner netting £55,000 in 1888 and 1889, winning such races as the July Stakes at Newmarket, the Epsom Derby and the Prince of Wales Stakes. | Over Round 105% | ||
